Fact: A man who allegedly took a woman hostage during a Friday bank robbery in suburban Washington, D.C., was shot and killed by authorities.
Observation: Good.
Fact: Playing in the opening round of last week's European Tour event in Bahrain, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez angrily broke his putter in two, picked up his wedge to use on the greens and made three straight birdies.
Observation: Would you expect anything less from the Most Interesting Man In The World?
Fact: Flying enthusiast Arnold Palmer (right) piloted his first aircraft in 1956. On Sunday, now 81, the golf legend made what he proclaimed his final flight as a pilot. With his license now expired, he will not seek to have it renewed.
Observation: Wait a minute. Arnold Palmer needs an airplane to fly?
Fact: Champions Tour golfer Jim Thorpe, 61, is out of an Alabama prison camp, transported to a Central Florida halfway house in the first step of finishing out his one-year sentence for failing to pay income taxes.
Observation: Thorpe probably never would have been caught, except a golf fan watching on television called into the IRA to report a rules violation.
Fact: TaylorMade Golf, promoting the coming release of its new R-11 driver, dressed some 20 of its tour players in all white last week at Torrey Pines.
Observation: 330-yard drives and two scoops of vanilla.
Fact: Jack Nicklaus, 71, and Tom Watson, 61, successfully defended their Champions Skins Game title in Hawaii Sunday, finishing with seven skins and $310,000 to edge Mark O'Meara and Bernhard Langer.
Observation: Nicklaus credited the extra distance found in a new titanium walker.
Fact: Trailing Bubba Watson by two shots and needing to hole a 72-yard wedge shot for eagle to force a playoff Sunday, Phil Mickelson sent caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay ahead to tend the pin. Mickelson then nearly stuffed the shot, hitting a foot left of the hole.
Observation: Cool. Very cool.
Fact: John Daly, who did not get sponsor exemptions to play the Bob Hope or the Waste Management, took offense, pointing out all he had done for the events in past years.
Observation: And what exactly has he done? The last time Daly played the Hope, in 2008, he withdrew. The last three times he played the Phoenix event, he withdrew twice (2005 and '06) and missed the cut once ('07).
