Philippe Dupuis Knee to Knee Hit on Olli Jokinen (Video)

Monday wasn't exactly a banner day for the Colorado Avalanche. Peter Forsberg ended his comeback attempt after just two games by announcing his retirement, while the team that remained on the ice was absolutely annihilated by the Calgary Flames by a 9-1 margin. The loss was Colorado's ninth in a row as its playoff hopes continue to slip away. The only team below the Avalanche in the standings is the Edmonton Oilers, while the they're now 10 points back of a playoff spot.

Calgary stormed out to a 5-0 first period lead thanks in large part to the play of Olli Jokinen, who recorded a goal and three assists in the opening 20 minutes. But as the period came to a close, Colorado's Philippe Dupuis caught him with a knee-on-knee hit that resulted in a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.

Jokinen did return for the second period, but ultimately left the game for good with what the Flames called a lower body injury.

Here's a look at the play, which happened right before the horn sounded...

We all had a good laugh this summer when the Flames signed Jokinen after a failed trip through Calgary during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, but he's been producing at a pretty solid rate over the past month (20 points in his last 17 games). The Flames, meanwhile, are 10-2-3 over their past 15 games, and thanks to Monday's win hold the No. 8 playoff spot in the West heading into Tuesday's action.

The next question for the Flames is how badly the injury to Jokinen is, while the Avs must wait and see if Dupuis gets any additional punishment from the league.
