Five-Step Drop: FSU Signs Jimbo Fisher to Lucrative Extension

February 17 2011 Last updated at 12:55 PM ET

FanHouse's college football staff provides you with a personal quarterback. We do the primary and secondary reads for you so you can properly start your day.1. It didn't take Jimbo Fisher very long to prove his worth to the Florida State administration. Fisher, who went 10-4 in his first season, signed a five-year, $13.75 million contract which raises his total pay package by just under $1 million per season. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Noles increased Fisher's buyout from a variable figure of $500,000 to $725,000 to a flat $2 million. Sounds like both parties are in it for the long haul.

2. Apparently you can forget those "Randy Shannon will be Randy Edsall's defensive coordinator at Maryland" rumors. The Terps have promoted linebackers coach Todd Bradford to the coordinator job, according to ESPN.com's Heather Dinich. She notes that a report circulating on Wednesday had Shannon, whose Miami contract was bought out after the season, losing at least $1.5 million in buyout money if he took the Maryland job. There are no reports on how much Shannon would have made at Maryland, but you have to figure it was a lot less than $1.5 million. You can't fault Shannon for making the smart economic decision, particularly since he won't have trouble finding another job once the buyout is safely in his bank account.

3. Bo Pelini is shaking things up a bit on his Nebraska staff but, in Peliniesque fashion, he isn't saying much. Tim Beck, the Huskers' running backs coach, will now be the offensive coordinator, while Ron Brown shifts from tight ends to running backs. Barney Cotton and John Garrison will share responsibility for the offensive line and tight ends. Pelini also brought in three new assistants from outside the program. What was notable is something Pelini didn't say, which is what exactly happened to former offensive coordinator Shawn Watson and former receivers coach Ted Gilmore. Defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders had already resigned for personal reasons. Omaha.com reports that Watson will be the the quarterbacks coach at Louisville, but no one is saying whether he and Gilmore resigned or were fired.

4. Speaking of coordinators, SI.com's Stewart Mandel takes a look at 10 new coordinators likely to have the biggest effect on their new teams in 2011. While much media attention is centering on Charlie Weis' new role as Will Muschamp's offensive coordinator at Florida, Mandel thinks Weis may find it tough sledding in Gainesville. "He'll almost certainly help quarterback John Brantley improve (and develop incoming freshmen Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett), but the rest of Florida's returning personnel doesn't seem to suit Weis' preferred style," he writes.

5. Former Indiana coach Bill Lynch, who was fired after the season, has landed a new gig as an associate athletic director at Butler University in Indianapolis. Lynch, a Butler alumnus, will primarily focus on raising money for Butler's athletic department. He should have plenty of connections; after all, the man has coached his entire career in the Hoosier state save for two seasons on Lee Corso's staffs at Northern Illinois and with the USFL's Orlando Renegades.
