Danny Kristo, North Dakota Hockey Player, Hospitalized With Frostbite

University of North Dakota sophomore hockey player Danny Kristo is hospitalized in St. Paul, Minn., where he is being treated for frostbite.

Kristo -- pictured to the right after being drafted in the second round by Montreal in June 2008 -- was walking near the North Dakota campus, which is located in Grand Forks, Sunday night. Temperatures in Grand Forks bottomed out at 11 degrees below zero Sunday, with wind chills as cold as 33 below zero. In those conditions, frostbite can occur in just over ten minutes.

The school says Kristo, 20, is out indefinitely, and no word was given regarding the severity of his condition. The frostbite occurred on the toes of his right foot.

"We have been in close contact with Danny's family. My concern is with Danny's health and his full recovery," North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said.

Kristo is a native of Eden Prairie, Minn., and played for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League before going to North Dakota. As a freshman last year, Kristo had 15 goals and 36 points to lead all Western Collegiate Hockey Association rookies. He was named the WCHA Rookie of the Year.

So far this season, Kristo has five goals and 22 points in 29 games.

North Dakota (19-8-2 overall, 14-6 WCHA) leads the WCHA standings by one point over Denver and two points over Minnesota Duluth. The Fighting Sioux are idle this weekend.
