Davies: Bradley's advice influenced MLS choice

New D.C. United striker Charlie Davies says US coach Bob Bradley?s advice weighed heavily on his decision to join MLS, and that earning minutes in his new league is essential for his return to the national team limelight.

Davies joined ExtraTime Radio on Thursday for a lengthy interview discussing his plans in 2011 and his hopes for recovering the form that made him a superstar before suffering serious injuries in an Oct. 2009 car accident.

LISTEN: Charlie Davies on ExtraTime Radio

?(Bradley) told me, ?Charlie, the bottom line is, you need to play,? Davies said on ET Radio. ?'Would I say to play 20 minutes every game at your club now or 90 minutes in MLS, what would be better for you? That?s an obvious answer ? the 90 minutes every game.?

?After he told me that,? Davies said, ?it was a no-brainer. My decision was made right when coach Bradley told me that.?

Davies joined D.C. United on trial earlier this month with hopes of landing a loan deal and eventually regaining his form after not starting a first-team match with the French side Sochaux since the accident.

He landed the loan deal, but he won?t make his debut until March 19 against the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium. His future with the US team and a potential roster spot on the CONCACAF Gold Cup roster this summer is contingent on how he plays from here.

?I need minutes, I need games, and that?s the only way I?m going to get back to my previous form, especially as soon as possible,? Davies said. ?My ultimate goal, of course, is to play with the national team again, and that?s what I?m striving for.

?They want me, I know they?re all rooting for me,? Davies added. ?So that means a lot to me. I gotta do whatever I can to make that happen.?

Davies also spoke about his emotions surrounding the upcoming season, admitting that he?s ?battled? with the question of how he?ll feel when he actually takes the field once again.

?I?m always wondering exactly how I?ll feel,? Davies said. ?I really don?t know exactly how I?ll feel until I?m there. I think I?ll be really excited and anxious to get it over with, and to show everyone I?m back. Maybe after the game it?ll be pretty emotional, but we?ll see.?

UFC 127: Ross Pearson Beats Spencer Fisher

  • Michael David Smith
  • Lead Blogger
Ross Pearson beats Spencer Fisher at UFC 127.Ross Pearson earned a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Spencer Fisher at UFC 127.

The fight featured 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, and it was close enough (especially in the first two rounds) that the fight was in doubt until the judges' scorecards were announced. But Pearson deserved the decision he got, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Pearson, the former Ultimate Fighter winner, fought evenly with Fisher in the stand-up in the first couple of rounds. But in the third Pearson really started to take control, finding his range in the striking and ending the fight on the ground on top of Fisher.

The victory improves Pearson's career record to 12-4, and serves as a bounce back for him after a disappointing loss to Cole Miller his last time in the Octagon. At age 26, Pearson looks like he's continuing to get better.

But the same can't be said for the 34-year-old Fisher, who falls to 24-7. Fisher has now lost three of his last four, and it looks like his best days are behind him.

UFC 127 Results: Brian Ebersole Upsets Chris Lytle

  • Michael David Smith
  • Lead Blogger
Brian Ebersole upsets Chris Lytle at UFC 127.In a big surprise at UFC 127, UFC newcomer Brian Ebersole upset Octagon veteran Chris Lytle, winning a unanimous decision after an action-packed 15 minutes.

"I'm overwhelmed with emotion," Ebersole said afterward, having just won his first chance to fight in the UFC after years of fighting on the small-time MMA circuit.

Ebersole started the fight by trying a crazy cartwheel kick -- a move he has actually used to knock out an opponent in the past. (Video here.) It didn't work, but it was a fun way to get things started. However, after that Lytle took the fight to the floor, where he attempted a series of guillotine chokes. None of those chokes worked, however, and Ebersole escaped every time, eventually turning the tables and finishing the first round on top of Lytle and landing strikes to Lytle's bloodied face.

The second round was a slow and steady exchange of strikes for the first few minutes, but Ebersole landed a huge knee to Lytle's chin, knocking him down and nearly knocking him out. Lytle was clearly dazed and Ebersole pounced, and although he wasn't able to finish the fight, he completely dominated the final minute and definitely won the round.

At the start of the third round Lytle looked like he thought he needed a finish, and he was pouring on the punches. But Ebersole survived Lytle's initial barrage and pinned Lytle against the cage. Once Ebersole had time to recover, he controlled most of the rest of the round. The fight ended with Ebersole on top and doing damage to Lytle's face, and at the end Lytle knew he had lost.

The judges scored it 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 for Ebersole, who improves his career MMA record to 47-14-1. Lytle falls to 30-18-5.

Brian Ebersole Chest Hair the Strangest Sight of UFC 127

  • Michael David Smith
  • Lead Blogger
Brian EbersoleBrian Ebersole made his UFC debut this weekend at UFC 127, and he did something we've never seen anyone do in the UFC before: He shaved his chest hair into an arrow, pointing up to his own face.

What would make a man shave his chest hair in this way? I have no idea. Ebersole is an odd bird, known for participating in some strange fights and pulling off some unusual moves during his 60-plus fights on the small-time MMA circuit, so maybe he just thought turning his chest hair into an arrow was one more way of distinguishing himself.

And although the chest hair wasn't exactly the most attractive look, it's hard to argue with Ebersole's success in the cage: He pulled off a surprising upset of Chris Lytle.

Maybe the chest hair was a lucky charm.
